Azerbaijani Ambassador in Canada and permanent representative of the country in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Farid Shafiev spoke at a meeting of the organization on wednesdya, said in the statement.

During his speech, Ambassador drew the attention of the Council of ICAO for the intentions commissioning airport in Khojaly by Armenian occupation forces. Ambassador Shafiyev noted that this provocation was contrary to international law and undermines security in the region.

Later, the ambassador also noted that the air space of occupied lands closed to civil aviation, and the departure of any aircraft in this area means that live of passengers is in danger.

Ambassador criticized irresponsible step of Armenia and noted that Azerbaijan has the right to defend its airspace under the relevant articles of the Chicago Convention.

Khojaly airport and airspace over Nagorno Karabakh and other occupied territories under the jurisdiction of Azerbaijan, he added.

Shafiev also confirmed the illegality of the organization of any flights of other countries without the permission of Azerbaijan.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the U.S. - are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
