Azerbaijan’s first lady, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva has been elected as a honorary citizen of Bulgaria’s Veliko Tarnovo city, said the message posted on the website of the city’s commune.

The proposal of the city’s Mayor Daniel Panov on the election of the Azerbaijan’s first lady as an honorary citizen was unanimously adopted at the ceremonial meeting on Aug. 25.

The status of honorary citizen has been awarded to the First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva for her huge contribution and participation in the protection, preservation and promotion of cultural heritage of the city.

An agreement “On conservation and restoration of Trapezitsa Architectural Museum Reserve and construction and repair of its technical infrastructure” was signed in May 2015 in Sofia.

Under the agreement, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, headed by the First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, carried out the restoration and preservation of the 150-meter long Western Wall of a historic monument, the construction of 700-meter long tourist alley, the creation and provision of a cultural centre, the repair and preservation of three churches on the territory, and the creation of a transportation infrastructure for those coming to visit the reserve.

Trapezitsa Architectural Museum Reserve is the oldest cultural monument of Bulgaria.
