BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 2. Terrorism is nothing new for Iran, Deputy Chairman of Azerbaijan's State Committee on Religious Associations Sayavush Heydarov told Trend within the "Relevant with Sahil Karimli" video project.
During the investigation of the murder of Ziya Bunyadov in the 1990s, it was unequivocally proven that the Iranian side was behind it. Why was this done? Because Ziya Bunyadov was the first to translate the Quran in Azerbaijan.
"They didn't like such Azerbaijani scientists. They preferred those who thought "in the Iranian way" and served Iran. And after that, dozens, even hundreds, of Iranian spy networks were identified. Thanks to National Leader Heydar Aliyev, the issue of religious security has become a priority," he noted.
Ziya Bunyadov, an Azerbaijani scientist-orientalist, Hero of the Soviet Union, and academician, was murdered on February 21, 1997, at 18:10 (GMT+4) in Baku, when he was leaving the house where he lived. At the time of the murder, Ziya Bunyadov was 75 years old.
