“SESSION OF UN SUB-COMMISSION WILL PLAY IMPORTANT PART IN PREVENTION OF ILLEGAL DRUG TRAFFIC,” SUMRU NAIAN

The UN-organized regular meetings on illegal drug traffic play important part in exchange of international experience and determination of strategy directed against illegal drug traffic,” Sumru Naian, the deputy chairman of the UN Auxiliary Commission on Illegal Drug Traffic in the Near and Middle East, said to a 40th session, Trend reports. According to Naian, the sub-commission renders great assistance to the strengthening of the mutual ties between the countries of the region.

Naian noted that approximately 1m hectares of drugs were annually grown across the world. Number of drug addicts comprises 20m, while people periodically used drugs makes

up 300m. People get $300bn from illegal drug traffic. “The money got from illegal drug traffic is mainly used for terrorism. The exchange of opinions at the meetings of the sub-commission is very significant for us, as it helps in development of the strategy and the implementation of the programs for technical aid in future,” she added. Illegal drug traffic also promotes spreading of AIDS.

In her remarks, Naian also touched upon large-scale illegal drug traffic in Iraq. “We concern about it and work with appropriate Iraq bodies to prevent the illegal drug traffic in the country,” she stressed.

She voiced hope that the session would play significant role in prevention of illegal drug traffic and crimes related to them.
