Kyrgyzstan's dependence on imported sugar has hit 85 percent, KyrTAG quotes Kyrgyz Agriculture Minister Torogul Bekov as saying at a meeting of the Committee on Land and Agriculture, Water Resources, Ecology and Regional Development on Tuesday.

"This year in Kyrgyzstan providing the population with domestic sugar will hit 15 percent, while imports will hit 85 percent, 21 percent of which accounts for Kazakhstan," Mr Bekov said.

He said in 2011 the sugar beet area sown hit 8500 hectares and the expected gross harvest is 170 tons.

"This harvest was possible at the expense of imported qualitative seeds from Germany. We intend to increase the area under sugar beet twice next year," Mr Bekov said.
