Uzbekistan reduces cotton fiber production

Uzbekistan decreased cotton fiber production by 1.4 percent in 2011 compared to the figure for 2010. Cotton fiber production in 2011 amounted to 1.099 million tons, the Uzbek State Statistics Committee said on Wednesday.

Cotton yarn production fell by 34.1 percent in 2011 to 122,400 tons. Cotton fabric production declined by 37.8 percent to 54.726 million square meters.

Uzbekistan ranks sixth in the world for cotton fiber production and third for its export. Annually the country produces about 3.5 million tons of raw cotton and 1.2 million tons of cotton fiber.

Medium-staple selective varieties with a fiber length of 32-33 mm hit 95 percent of all the cotton cultivated in the country.

More than 75 percent of the cotton fiber is exported.
