The Balkan shipyard in Turkmenbashi should be a basis for development of domestic shipbuilding, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said pointing to the importance of training relevant personnel abroad, the "Neutral Turkmenistan" newspaper wrote Sept. 15.

This issue was discussed at a government meeting. A report on the work carried out at the shipbuilding and repair plant was presented.

Currently, two dry cargo ships, "Turkmenistan" and "Makhtumkuli", and oil tanker "Bitarap" are being repaired there.

It is planned to build ships of various classes and types in the future. Among them, there are the RO-RO ferries for transportation of wheeled vehicles (cars, trucks, trailers and wagons).

The Balkan shipyard started to operate in May at the international seaport of Turkmenbashi.

The shipyard was designed according to the requirements of IACS (International Association of Classification Societies).

The shipyard occupies a total area of 166,000 square meters. Its construction project was implemented by the Turkish company Gap Insaat.
