Japan interested in strengthening partnership with Turkmenistan

Japan is interested in further strengthening the mutually beneficial partnership with Turkmenistan, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said at a meeting in Tokyo with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov, the state news agency Turkmen Dovlet Khabarlary (TDH) reported Oct. 24.

An exchange of views took place on various areas of interstate cooperation, in particular in the political, economic and cultural spheres. Notably, they considered the possibility of deepening productive partnerships through the implementation of new joint projects with Japanese companies in the gas chemical industry, electric power industry, in the field of transport, modernization of the railway system in Turkmenistan and other industries where the fulfillment of mutual interests seems to be the most effective, the message says.

In 2013, a number of agreements and contracts were signed between the Turkmengaz, Turkmenkhimiya and Turkmennebit (Turkmenoil) state concerns and the Japanese Sojitz, Chiyoda, Nippon, ITOCHU, JGC, Kawasaki, TOYO, Mitsui, Tsukishima, Mitsubishi Sumitomo companies.

The total cost of joint projects scheduled for implementation was estimated at $10 billion. The cooperation includes the implementation of projects for the construction of industrial complexes in Balkan region of Turkmenistan – the plant for the production of urea fertilizers in Garabogaz, the plant for the production of polyethylene and polypropylene in Kiyanly, and the plant for the production of gasoline from natural gas in Akhal region.
