Some 355,900 tons of garlic were grown in Iran in the last Iranian year (March 21, 2018 - March 20, 2019) Huseyn Asgari, director general of the horticulture department of the Iranian Agriculture Ministry said.
Some 207,100 tons accounted for green garlic, while 148,700 tons - for dry garlic, Asgari added, Trend reports referring to the Iranian Agriculture Ministry’s website.
He said that 7,700 hectares accounted for green garlic, while 12,800 hectares – for dry garlic.
Among the main provinces producing green garlic are Ardabil province – 1,300 tons, Khuzestan province – 1,090 tons, Zanjan province – 2,000 tons, Gilan province – 1,000 tons and Lorestan province – 599 tons, Asgari said.
He stressed that East Azerbaijan province (961 tons), Kurdistan province (529 tons), Kerman province (550 tons), Gilan province (700 tons), Mazandaran province (3,000 tons) and Hamadan province (4,340 tons) are the main provinces producing dry garlic.
Asgari added that Iran ranks 25th in garlic production in the world after China, India, Bangladesh, Egypt, South Korea, Russia, Myanmar, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Spain and other countries.
Last Iranian year, 1,660 tons of garlic worth $1.4 million, 4,700 tons of dry garlic worth $4.73 million were exported, he said.
