In July 2019, Georgia continues to import electricity from Azerbaijan, Trend reports with reference to the website of Georgian JSC Electricity System Commercial Operator (ESCO).

From July 1 to July 18, Azerbaijan imported 40 million kW/h of electricity to Georgia. In the same month last year, electricity imports from Azerbaijan to Georgia amounted only to 1.16 million kW/h.

In July of this year, the export of electricity from Georgia has nearly stopped. Reportedly, imports are necessary because of the relatively low output of hydropower plants, as well as due to the increased electricity consumption in the summer period.

As ESCO statistics show, compared to June last year, electricity consumption has almost doubled to 324.471 million kW/h.

Electricity imports for the six months of this year amounted to 622.1 million kW/h (increase by 5.1 percent). Of this, deliveries from Azerbaijan increased by 6 percent to 547.6 million kW/h (88 percent of total imports), and 74.4 million kW/h was received from Russia (increase 2.4 times).

Electricity exports decreased by 48.7 percent to 234.3 million kW/h. In particular, supplies to Turkey decreased 2.8 times to 112.8 million kW/h (48.1 percent of total exports). Around 59.2 million kW/h were supplied to Russia (increase by 11.9 percent), and 8.4 million kW/h were exported to Azerbaijan (decrease by 39.6 percent).
