Azerbaijan May Begin Export of Gas to Iran – Head of Azerigaz CJSC

Azerbaijan, Agjabadi, 17 January / Trend corr G. Jabiyev / Azerbaijan is considering the opportunity of exporting its vacant natural gas to Iran. "At the moment, possible sale of the gas to Iran is on the agenda," Alikhan Malikov, the President of Azerigaz CJSC said to journalists on 17 January.

Malikov did not specify the time and volume of possible sale of gas to Iran.

" Azerbaijan does not intend to purchase gas in 2008. The country's own gas is enough and Azerbaijan is even ready to sell the gas to other countries," Malikov said.

Azerbaijan and Iran are connected currently by not operating Gazi-Mahammad-Astara-Bind-Biand gas pipeline, with a total length of 1474.5km (296.5km in Azerbaijan). Its carrying capacity makes up 10bln cu m a year. This route is a branch of Gazakh-Astara-Iran pipeline, which was put into the exploitation in 1971.
