Azerbaijan ups natural gas transportation in Jan-May

In January to May 2009, cargo transportation made up 73 million tons of cargo, or 0.8% more than the same period of 2008, the Azerbaijan State Statistics Committee reported.

Of the total volume of transported cargo, 72% accounted for of the private sector. In January-May, of the total volume of transported cargo, 46.8% was transported by cars, 35.1% - pipelines, 11.1% - railway and 7 % - ships.

Passenger transportation totaled 519.4 million people or 7.7% more than January-May 2008. The share of private sector in the passenger transportation made up 81.6%. The passenger transportation by cars made up 81.7%, metro - 17.7%.

Azerbaijan State Railway Department (ASRD) transported 8.1 million tons of cargo compared to 11.5 million tons the last year.

The cargo shipping via sea rose by 8.7% and comprised 5.1 million tons. Some 72% of cargo deliveries fell on oil and oil products, while 26.5% was dry cargo. Some 71.4% of cargo deliveries fell on oil and oil products, while 28 % was dry cargo. All cargo deliveries were implemented under the international operations.

The volume of cargo processed in Azerbaijani ports was 2.1 million tons in January-May 2009 compared to 2.5 million tons during the same period of 2008.

In January to May 2009, cargo transportation by vehicles made up 34.1 million tons, or 8.3% more than 2008. Passenger transportation comprised 424.4 million people or 7.7% more with 96.5% people using buses and 3.5% people - vehicles.

Nearly 92 million passengers used metro services or 8.2% rise from 2008.

In January-May2009, the passenger transportation via airways made up 441,300 people, including 7.9% implemented by private sector.

In January-May 2009, the export via oil pipelines made up 20.2 million tons which is the same with January-May in 2008. During this period, 75.1% of oil was transported via the BTC. This pipeline transported about 15.2 million tons of oil compared to 15.1 million tons in the same period of 2008.

In January-May, 2009, transportation via gas pipelines made up 7.5 billion cu.m. This figure is by 22.4 percent more than the figure in 2008. Around 2.5 billion cu.m. of gas was transported via South Caucasus Pipeline during the reported period.

In January to May, 2009, 13.9 million tons of cargo were transported via the Eurasian corridor compared to 15.7 million tons in 2008.
