Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov. 17 / Trend /

RWE Dea AG has opened its branch office in Turkmenistan, the company reported.

RWE Dea AG's Turkmenistan Branch was established in October 2009 and will be headquartered in the national capital, Ashgabat. Heiko Oppermann will be responsible for the new branch office as General Manager.

Heiko Oppermann began his career in 1980 with the former Deutsche Texaco AG, Hamburg, as a reservoir engineer based in Germany and in Texas in the U.S.

"Turkmenistan plays a vital role in securing Europe's energy reserves," said Oppermann. "The first order of business will be to kick off the exploration phase for Block 23." Licence Block 23 is located in the Turkmen section of the Caspian Sea and was awarded to RWE Dea as part of a Production Sharing Contracts (PSC) in August.

"The experience gained in the field of shallow-water development of resources in an ecologically sensitive environment will also stand us in good stead in Turkmenistan," explained Oppermann.

Licence Block 23 is located in the south-eastern region of the Caspian Sea, immediately off the coast of Turkmenistan. The licence area covers an area of about 940 square kilometres. Current planning provides for an environmental impact study to be carried out initially. Based on existing 2D data, a 3D seismic survey will then be carried out across an area of about 400 square kilometres in size, followed by en exploration well.
