Iran electricity consumption rises by 2,500 MWh

Iran's electricity consumption reached its peak at 33,722 megawatt hours on April 16.

The electricity peak on the mentioned day was 2,500 megawatt hours more than the same day the previous year, Iran's IRIB News Agency reported on April 17.

The stored electricity of Iran's power plants also hit 3,485 megawatt hours on April 16. The country's industries consumed some 3,498 megawatt hours of electricity on the mentioned day.

Managing Director of West Region Power Company Abdolaziz Karimi said on Jan. 25 that Iran's electricity consumption will reach 51,000 megawatt hours in the current Iranian calendar year (which started on March 21).

"The figure is expected to reach 54,500 megawatt hours in the Iranian calendar year of 1394 (will start on March 21, 2015)," he added.

The country's power generation capacity is currently over 70 gigawatts.

Iran currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq.

The country seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has attracted more than $1.1 billion in investments for the construction of three new power plants.
