BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 7. Some units at Baku Oil Refinery named after Heydar Aliyev have suspended operation since April 4 for planned maintenance work, Ibrahim Ahmadov, spokesperson for Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR, the refinery’s owner, told Trend.

“After the planned work we are going to commission new major technological units in stages as part of the refinery’s modernization. This process is important for starting Euro 5 diesel production,” he said.

Moreover, Ahmadov noted that Azerikimya production union also suspended operation on April 5 for maintenance work.

“The simultaneous suspension of both facilities is due to their interconnectivity in a single value chain, as the Baku Refinery is the major source of raw material for the Azerikimya production union,” SOCAR’s spokesperson explained.

Heydar Aliyev Baku Oil Refinery, located on the Absheron Peninsula, is one of the largest oil refineries in the South Caucasus. The refinery is expected to start producing Euro-5 gasoline from the second quarter of 2023.
