BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 18. INPEX CORPORATION (INPEX) announced its investment in EneCoat Technologies Co., Ltd. (EneCoat), a Kyoto University-based startup specializing in the development of next-generation perovskite solar cells, Trend reports via INPEX.
Perovskite solar cells, known for their thin-film structure utilizing perovskite crystal materials, are lauded for their flexibility and potential to be deployed in locations unsuitable for traditional renewable energy solutions. This innovation is expected to significantly broaden the application of renewable energy power generation. These solar cells use iodine compounds as raw materials, aligning well with INPEX's operations at the Naruto Gas Field in Chiba Prefecture, where iodine is extracted from subsurface brine water following natural gas production.
EneCoat stands out as Japan's sole startup dedicated to developing perovskite solar cells and related materials. Leveraging its collaboration with Kyoto University, the company has established a cutting-edge product development system and is striving to create high-performance products aimed at commercialization. INPEX’s investment is intended to expand its iodine supply chain, thereby supporting EneCoat’s efforts toward the mass production of perovskite solar cells.
