Nobel Prize Laureate Jores Alferov in Baku

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr S. Babayeva / The Nobel Prize laureate, the Vice-President of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, famous scientist Jores Alferov, arrived in Baku.

According to the Azerbaijan Communications and IT Ministry, the purpose of Alferov's visit is to participate in the first international conference entitled 'The First International Conference on Material and Information Sciences in High Technologies' to take place in Baku from 26 to 29 September.

Alferov is an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), the vice-president of RAS, the chairman of the Presidium of RAS St. Petersburg Scientific Centre, the director of RAS Physical & Engineering Institute named after A. F. Ioffe, an MP of the Russian Parliament, a member of the Committee on Education and Science. He was born in Vitebsk on 15 March 1930. In 1952, he graduated with honours from the Leningrad Electric Engineering Institute named after V. I. Ulyanov (Lenin), faculty of Electrovacuum Engineering. He worked as an engineer, junior, senior researcher, sector head, and department head in Physical & Engineering Institute named after Ioffe of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Since 1987 he has been the director of the Institute. In 1961, he defended his Ph.D. thesis on research of power germanium and siliceous rectifiers. In 1970, as a result of research of heterojunctions in transistors, he defended a thesis and took his Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences degree. In 1972, he was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

Alferov is the author of 50 inventions, 3 monographs, over 350 scientific articles in Russian and international journals. He is a Foreign Member of Poland Academy of Sciences, Frankfurt Institute (USA), US National Academy of Sciences and National Engineering Academy, honorary professor of Havana University ( Cuba). Nobel Prize laureate of 2000.

Besides Alferov, a Nobel Prize laureate from the United States, Ivar Giaever, is also expected to visit the conference in Baku.
