Azerbaijan prepares for election to ITU Council

Azerbaijan prepares for the election to the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in a group of countries in the 'C' region (Eastern Europe and Northern Asia), the Azerbaijani Ministry of Communications and High Technologies told Trend Oct. 20.

The election will be held next week as part of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, to be held in Busan (Republic of Korea) from October 20 to November 7. Azerbaijan will be represented at the conference by a ministerial delegation, headed by Minister of Communications and High Technologies Ali Abbasov, the ministry said.

Earlier, the ITU approved the candidacy of Azerbaijan to participate in the election in a group of the countries in the "C" region.

A chief engineer of the Azerbaijani State Administration of Radio Frequencies of the ministry Ilham Efendiyev will put forward his candidacy to the ITU Radio Regulations Board. Moreover, Kazakhstan, Serbia and Russia also put forward their candidates to participate in the election.

Previously, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania and Russia were members of the ITU council in the "C" region for 2010-2014.

A Plenipotentiary Conference is the ITU supreme body, responsible for formulating the further policy of the organization. The conference, convened every four years, determines a general policy. Four-year strategic and financial plans are adopted. The organization's senior management, members of the council and the Radio Regulations Board are elected.
