Open Net to finance project for internet provision of Georgia's Kobuleti region

State non-governmental organization Open Net will spend 2 million lari ($580,819) on a project for the f the Georgian region of Kobuleti, Trend reports via the State Procurement Agency.

According to the tender, the winning company will have to lay 50 kilometers of fiber-optic cable in the Kobuleti region. Within the framework of the project, fiber-optic Internet access points will be created in the city of Kobuleti and 14 villages of the municipality.

This will be the second Open Net project, the first - with a project worth 10 million lari ($2.9 million) - the organization introduced the Internet in Guria, but then the project was implemented without competition, under a direct contract with Parvus Group. It was assumed that the project would be completed by the end of 2020, although the deadline for submitting the project to the sales company was extended until February 28, 2021.

As reported on the website of the State Procurement Agency, interested companies will be able to submit their proposals from 12 to 17 May.

In January 2020, the Georgian government approved a new strategy for the development of broadband Internet infrastructure, according to which the government will finance the construction of Internet infrastructure where the private sector is less interested.

According to the plan of the Ministry of Economy, by 2025, 100 percent of households should have access to 100 megabits per second of speed.
