DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, January 18. The Sugdtextiles light industry enterprise in the Sughd region of Tajikistan plans to process up to 6,000 tons of cotton in the initial stage, Trend reports.
According to the press service of the head of the Sughd region, preparatory work for the launch of the enterprise is currently underway. The facility is undergoing modernization by Tajik entrepreneurs.
The reconstruction and modernization of the enterprise are timed to coincide with the 35th anniversary of Tajikistan's independence (in 2026). The plant is being entirely upgraded with European equipment, and spinning, weaving, sewing, and dyeing workshops will be established.
The first Tajik-Korean joint venture, Kabool-Tajik-Textiles, commenced operations in the city of Khujand in 1990 and operated until 2008. After a period of dormancy until 2015, the enterprise only functioned for one year. In 2020, Sugdtextiles, formerly known as Kabool-Tajik-Textiles, resumed operations after a five-year hiatus but subsequently ceased its activities once again.
The value of industrial production in Tajikistan's Sughd region, reached 26.5 billion somoni ($2.4billion) in 2023. The figure increased by 2.9 billion somoni ($265 million) or 10.7 percent compared to 2022.
The Sughd region currently hosts 1,100 small and medium-sized industrial enterprises. In 2023, surpassing the initial plan of 150 new establishments, 269 new workshops and businesses were established, generating 2,455 job opportunities.
Tajikistan is now implementing a rapid industrialization strategy for 2022-2026. In January 2022, President Rahmon named this period the 'Years of Industrial Development', with ambitious intentions to raise industrial output by 2.5 times in five years. The target for 2026 is 95 billion somoni ($9.3 billion), up from 38.8 billion somoni ($3.7 billion) in 2021.
