Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says the construction of the Bushehr nuclear power plant is a symbol of the cooperation between Iran and Russia, Press TV reported.

In a meeting with the new Russian ambassador to Tehran on Sunday, Salehi noted that Iran and Russia can exchange views and cooperate in regional and international issues, IRNA reported.

He went on to say that the current volume of Iran-Russia trade falls short of their potential.

"The two countries can cooperate more in the political, economic, trade, and cultural areas, oil and gas, and construction of power plants to raise the volume of bilateral trade to $10 billion a year," he said.

Russian Ambassador Levan Jagarian said that the meeting between the two countries' presidents during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in the Kazakh capital Astana in June 2011 raised bilateral relations to a new level.

The Russian ambassador also presented his credentials to Salehi.

Iran officially launched the Bushehr nuclear power plant, which is located southeast of the city of Bushehr along the Persian Gulf, on September 12.

German companies began initial construction of the facility in 1975, but the work was halted following the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

In 1995, Iran and Russia reached an agreement to complete the project, but there were numerous delays due to technical and financial problems.
