Iran becomes Turkey’s 3rd gas supplier

Turkey’s gas imports from Iran witnessed a fall by 31 percent in May 2018 compared to the preceding year, and the Islamic Republic lost its position as the second gas exporter to the neighboring country.

Turkey’s gas import from Iran amounted to 499.82‎ million cubic meters (mcm) in May 2018, compared to ‎‎722.04‎ ‎mcm in the same month of 2017.

Natural gas import from Iran accounted for 16.6 percent of the country’s total gas imports in the one-month period, according to the latest report released by Turkey’s Energy Market Regulatory Body.

The Islamic Republic was Turkey’s third gas supplier in the period, after Russia and Azerbaijan, which supplied 1,353 mcm and 601 mcm of gas to Turkey, respectively, in May.

The Islamic Republic supplied 22 percent of Turkey’s gas demand in April 2018.

In January-May 2018, Iran exported ‎3,559.2 mcm of natural gas to Turkey, 10 percent less year-on-year (3,949.8 mcm in January-May 2017). ‎

Turkey’s gas import from Iran in 2017 stood at 9.2 billion cubic meters (bcm).

Iran’s overall gas exports to Turkey amounted to 7.8 and 7.7 bcm in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

Turkey’s total natural gas import stood at 3.009‎ bcm in May 2018, registering a fall by 19.3 percent year-on-year.

Turkey also exported ‎60.85‎ million cubic meters of gas to Greece in May 2018, indicating a rise by 103 percent year-on-year.
