Tehran police alarmed by number of people engaged in theft for first time

As many as 657 people have been detained as part of an operation carried out by Tehran police this week, Tehran Police Chief Brigadier General Hossein Rahimi said in an interview with journalists, ILNA reported.

He said that 204 detainees, accused of theft, had criminal records, however, 453 people were engaged in theft for the first time.

“This is an alarm for us,” he noted, adding that 19,035 stolen items were seized.

As part of the operation, 133 cars and 115 motorcycles were found, and 199 criminal cases on theft were opened, he said.

“As part of the operation, 16 smugglers were identified and detained, and 261,454 various items were seized,” he noted. “The total value of the seized items is about $2.6 million.”

Rahimi added that 13 firearms were seized.

He noted that 41 fugitives were also detained.
