Iran's Defense Minister Hossein Dehgan says the country's Barvar 373 long-range air defense system would be tested by March 2016.

Dehgan said that Iran has built an indigenous system, similar to Russian S-300 and would be tested by the end of current fiscal year, which will end on March 20,2016.

Russia signed the contract in 2007 to sell Iran five S-300 ground-to-air missile systems. The $800-million contract to deliver S-300 air defense missile systems to Iran was cancelled in 2010 by then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, falling in line with the UN sanctions imposed on Iran due to its disputed nuclear program. In turn, Tehran filed a currently pending $4-billion lawsuit against Russia in Geneva's arbitration court.

Then Iran announced that it is preparing to build its own defense missile complex - Barvar 373. The country first unveiled the system during a military parade on April 18.

According to Iranian security officials, Bavar 373 is better than the Russian S-300, as it is able to track over 100 targets, just like the Russian system but with a higher targeting capability.

Despite that the ban on delivering the S-300 system to Iran has been lifted, it is yet unclear when will it be delivered to Iran.

Meanwhile, Tass news agency quoted Sergei Ryabkov, Russian deputy foreign minister that supplying Iran with Russian S-300 missile defense systems is not a matter of the near future.
