A young Palestinian man was found dead Thursday from apparent electrocution in an underground tunnel used to smuggle banned goods between Egypt and Gaza, Egyptian security sources and witnesses said, DPA reported.
Police forces across the border from Gaza removed the man's corpse from the tunnel, witnesses on the Egyptian side of the border town of Rafah told the German Press Agency dpa.
Egyptian security forces said they began their search "after being informed of a death in one of the tunnels."
The man reportedly died of electrocution from the electrical system used to light the underground tunnel.
Deaths frequently occur in the tunnels beneath the border between Egypt and the besieged Gaza Strip, often when tunnels collapse.
Egypt and Israel tightened their blockade on the Gaza Strip after Hamas took control of the territory in 2007. The tunnels are used to smuggle people, arms, and banned goods such as building materials.
