Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday sent condolences to his Egyptian Counterpart Hosni Mubarak over the blast near Coptic Christian Church in Alexandria which killed at least 21 and injured another 79, RIA Novosti reported.

The explosion occurred after New Year Mass as the worshippers were leaving the church. There are no Russian nationals among those affected, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Police in Egypt believe the explosive device detonated near the Coptic Christian Church was activated by a suicide bomber.

In a telegram to the Egyptian president Abbas called the accident "flagitious and cruel act aimed to destroy security and stability in brotherly Egypt and stir hatred between Muslims and Christians."
