United Nations officials were Monday reporting a decline in the number of people trying to flee Libya since air strikes by international forces started over the weekend, dpa reported.

A official from UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, at Libya's border with Tunisia said the situation was "quiet."

But officials were receiving indications from Libyan organizations that "there are an increasing number of displaced" people in the country.

The organizations "mentioned some 5,000 people taking refuge in school halls and university communal spaces in the east of the country, although we think the number could be higher," Sybella Wilkes at UNHCR in Geneva told the German Press Agency dpa.

As of Saturday, an estimated 317,605 people had fled Libya, mainly to Egypt and Tunisia, but also to Niger and Algeria.
