Syria has requested technical assistance from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and officially notified the group of its plans to become a member, the OPCW informed Friday, dpa reported.
Acting Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad made the request and notification in a phone call to OPCW Director General Ahmet Uzumcu.
An OPCW spokeman said Syria did not clarify what kind of technical assistance was needed. It was not clear if a Syrian representative would travel to the group's Hague headquarters for discussions about the possibility of Syrian membership.
