One person was killed and another critically injured Monday when a small plane crashed short of a runway at Daytona Beach International Airport, officials told CNN.

The twin-engine Aero Commander Model 500 had just taken off from the airport's smaller runway when it contacted the control tower to report engine trouble, Volusia County, Florida, spokeswoman Vickie Pleus told CNN. The plane was attempting to return to the airport and land on the airport's larger runway, to the east, but crashed about 200 feet short of the runway, she said.

The flight was not a commercial or training flight, Pleus said.
