A strong car bomb explosion has targeted mourners at a funeral in eastern Afghanistan and killed 10 people, including senior officials, police say, Press TV reported.

The explosion took place on Wednesday when a bomber blew himself up outside the main mosque in Mihtarlam, the provincial capital of eastern Laghman province.

"There was a suicide attack outside Mihtarlam mosque. There are a big number of civilian deaths. A number of government officials have also been killed," AFP quoted Interior Ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary as saying.

An official at the Afghan health ministry said at least 10 bodies had been brought into hospitals with 36 people being wounded.

The deputy head of Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security Intelligence agency, Abdullah Laghmani, was killed in the explosion, a police source told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Laghman governor Lutfullah Mashal was also wounded in the blast, he added.
