A passenger plane operated by Merpati Airline skidded off runway while landing in heavy rains and plunged into a river near the airport in Manokwari of Papua on Tuesday, injuring some 20 people, police said, Xinhua reported.
The head of the plane sunk in the river and its body was broken into two parts, Papua police spokesman Agus Rianto told Xinhua by phone.
The plane moved up to over 700 meters from the runway, he said.
"Several people were wounded and rushed to nearby hospitals," said Rianto.
The accident took place at 10: 50 local time (0150 GMT) ,the spokesman said.
