A passenger plane with more than 90 people overshot the runway and burst into flames after landing in Yichun City in north-eastern China's Heilongjiang Province late Tuesday night, dpa reported.

According to the Xinhua agency, over 20 people were injured in the incident, with civil aviation officials correcting initial accounts that the plane had crashed.

Citing government and airline company sources, Xinhua said the plane was an Embraer ERJ-190 of Henan Airlines.

Civil aviation authorities spoke of 91 people on board while Henan Airlines had told Xinhua the plane was carrying 96 people.

Officials in Yichun, located about 1,000 kilometres north-east of Beijing, said the accident occurred at about 10:10 pm local time (1410 GMT).

The plane had taken off shortly before 9 pm (1300 GMT) from the provincial capital Harbin, some 300 kilometres south-west of Yichun.

Rescuers were rushing to the crash site, sources told Xinhua.
