Ministry: Earthquake in Turkey damages dozens of houses

An earthquake in Turkey's Canakkale province damaged 85 houses and two mosques, Murat Kurum, the Minister of the Environment and Urban Planning of the country, said, Trend reports via Turkish media.

Currently work is underway to eliminate the consequences of the earthquake in Canakkale, the minister noted.

The 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit Turkey's Izmir and Canakkale provinces on Feb. 20. The epicenter was 148 kilometers north-west of the city of Izmir. The center of the earthquake was eight kilometers deep.

Turkey is located in the seismically active zone, and the country often suffers strong earthquakes, which often lead to casualties.

The strongest fluctuations of the Earth's crust in Turkey were recorded in 1999 in the Marmara Sea region. The magnitude of the tremors that time was 7.4 points and caused the death of more than 18,000 people.
