Istanbul - most car-heavy city in Turkey

In September 2019, Istanbul had the biggest share among the Turkish cities with the most driven cars, Trend reports referring to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK).

It was noted that the percentage of cars in Istanbul made up 32.1 percent of the total number of cars in Turkey for the aforementioned period.

"The percentage of vehicles during the specified period amounted to 5.9 percent in Izmir, 8.1 percent in Ankara and 4.6 percent in Antalya," the report reads.

According to the information, the remaining 49.3 percent accounts for other cities.

In September 2019, the number of vehicles on Turkish roads increased by 16 percent compared to the same month of 2018 and amounted to 23.1 million vehicles.

The share of cars amounted to 54.1 percent, that of vans and trucks to 16.4 percent, motorcycles to 14.3 percent, tractors to 8.2 percent and of other vehicles to 7 percent.

Renault accounted for 13.2 percent of the vehicles used in September 2019, Fiat – 10.4 percent, Volkswagen – 14.3 percent, Honda – 4.9 percent.

The remaining 57.2 percent accounted for other car brands.

Turkey ranks sixth in Europe in car production. Models of Ford, FIAT, Renault, Toyota, Honda, Opel, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and MAN are currently assembled in Turkey. Turkey also manufactures local brands of buses such as BMC, Temsa and Otokar.
