When creating the Eurasian Economic Union, the European Union was used as a model, Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister Kairat Kelimbetov said today.

"The EU was a model for us," he said at a meeting within the 11th Eurasian Media Forum.

"Though one must recognize that the European Union is a complex association, which includes 20 countries, we have three countries, but, nevertheless, there are a lot of difficulties."

He added that Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus must examine all the nuances of the EU experience.

"We must learn to diligently examine the EU's shortcomings, as Europeans do," he said. "We try to learn from the EU's advantages."

Kelimbetov reminded that heads of the three countries - Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan will gather in Astana in May to discuss the preparation of the agreement on the Eurasian Economic Union.

"The agreement on the Eurasian Economic Union envisages a code of laws," he said. These are more than 70 agreements - a huge volume of laws. The business community of our country will live in accordance with them. Combining all of these laws will be the basis of the agreement."
