Taiwan's coast guard arrested a British man accused of smuggling 4.4 kilograms of marijuana worth more than 10 million Taiwan dollars (3 million US dollars), a spokesman said Tuesday, DPA reported.

Officials were alerted by a sniffer dog after the 36-year-old, identified only by his last name, Jones, landed early Tuesday at Kaohsiung International Airport in southern Taiwan on a Vietnam Airlines flight, Tainan coast guard squad leader Chu Ching-ho said.

Chu said agents found 16 marijuana bricks stuffed inside four pairs of smelly sports shoes in the suspect's baggage.

"The suspect attempted to use the smell of the used sports shoes to cover the marijuana odour, but the sniffer dog was still able to track down the bricks," Chu said.

The suspect was turned over to the Kaohsiung Prosecutor's Office for further investigation.

Under Taiwan law, trafficking of marijuana is subject to prison terms of more than seven years and a fine of up to 10 million Taiwan dollars.
