BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 2. International organization Global Carbon Council (headquartered in Qatar) plans to provide small hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) in Kalbajar with carbon certificates, an informed source told Trend.

“HPPs in Azerbaijan will be able to receive carbon certificates for the first time. It is noteworthy that these facilities, which belong to the category of renewable energy sources, are located in the territories of Azerbaijan liberated from occupation,” the source emphasized.

According to him, this initiative will gradually cover other Azerbaijani HPPs.

Meanwhile, HPPs with a total capacity of 20.2 MW have been commissioned in Lachin, Kalbajar, and Sugovushan by April 2024.

Altogether, there will be more than 10 HPPs in the territories liberated from occupation.

Besides, the government announced that the total capacity of hydroelectric power plants in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur will reach 500 MW in the next few years.

Construction of a 100 MW wind power plant is also planned in the Lachin/Kalbajar zone.

The carbon certificate is given to those facilities that operate without greenhouse gas emissions or with minimal emissions.
