The US ambassador to Azerbaijan Robert Cekuta has discussed the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and efforts to build peace in the region, said the official Twitter page of the US embassy in Baku.

The discussions were held during the visit of the US ambassador to Azerbaijan's Sumgayit city March 2.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Meanwhile, Cekuta met with the head of Sumgayit City Executive Power to learn about social and economic development priorities in the region.

Cekuta also discussed the importance of entrepreneurship and ways to increase jobs for youth in Azerbaijan.
