The Azerbaijani Ministry of National Security detained 12 people involved in illegal drug smuggling from Iran over the past few days.

Nearly 40.5 kilograms of drugs were seized.

The cultivation of certain drugs has been organized in occupied Azerbaijani territories. The drugs were smuggled to Iran and from there to Azerbaijan, the Ministry of National Security told Trend on Tuesday.

As a result, Azerbaijani citizens Babak Bahirov, Ramil Maharramov and Iranian citizen Ibrahimi Asgar were detained.

It has been found that the above-mentioned individuals together with resident of the Karabakh village, Parsabad region of Iran Arsalam Halim smuggled more than 8 kilograms of hashish, almost 7 kilograms of opium and almost 9.5 kilograms of dried marijuana through Iran-Azerbaijan border.

As a result of another ministry operation, two Azerbaijani citizens smuggling drugs - Latif Meraliyev and Fuad Hasanov were arrested. Meraliyev and Hasanov together with Iranian citizen Maharram, who is being identified by the Ministry of National Security, smuggled 647.8 grams of heroin and nearly two kilograms of marijuana from Iran to Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijani citizen Hidayat Nazarov was also detained. He smuggled 939.2 grams of heroin, 4.8 kilograms of opium and 989.1 grams of dried marijuana from Iran to Azerbaijan together with other individuals.

Azerbaijani citizens Vusal Rahimli, Samir Rzayev, Ravana Mahmudova and Nagi Mahmudov were also detained.
Criminal cases have been filed.

A preventive measure in the form of arrest was chosen for these people.

Investigations are underway.
