EU Special Representative Urges All Political Forces to Respect Election Results in Georgia

Azerbaijan, Baku, 14 January /corr. Trend K.Ramazanova / The European Union's Special Representative for South Caucasus, Peter Semneby, urges all political forces to respect the election results and to engage constructively and democratically in order to ensure that Georgia continues moving forward, Semneby said by telephone from Belgium on 14 January.

Discussions between political forces are an essential part of this process, he said. As a result of the Presidential elections in Georgia on 5 January, Mikhail Saakashvili, was re-elected as President.

The EU Special Representative urges Georgia to take all necessary steps to address the identified shortcomings in order to ensure successful Parliamentary elections later this year. He welcomes good cooperation of the Georgian authorities with the OSCE/ODIHR election observation mission. However the European Union also notes that significant challenges were revealed which need to be addressed urgently. After the elections on 5 January, the OSCE observers stated that generally the elections met the international standards. However, they highlighted a number of unregulated issues in the election process which should be resolved urgently.

Mikhail Saakashvili was forced to move the presidential elections in Georgia to 5 January after numerous demonstrations from opposition parties at the beginning of November.
