Azerbaijan can Join Viking Transport Project: Lithuanian Ambassador

Azerbaijan, Baku, 29 May / corr. Trend S. Agayeva/ Lithuania proposes Azerbaijan to join Viking transport project, Kestutis Kudzmanas, the ambassador of Lithuania to Azerbaijan said to Trend on 29 May.

The inter-governmental cooperation between Ukraine, Lithuania and Belarus was strengthened by signing a three-power treaty to realize the Viking project on 12 May 2008. The project envisages unification of the transit tariffs, simplification of the custom procedures and speeding up of the goods supply.

The transport project on the railway container traffic Viking can be an important element of the transport corridor from the Scandinavian countries to the South-East Asia, Ambassador said.

According to Ambassador, the project can be further extended through Black Sea to Georgia and Azerbaijan onwards through the Caspian to the Central and South-East Asia. The project enables to supply cargo, from the Baltic sea region to the South Korea, 13-18 days faster than by sea transport.

The project is aimed only for commercial advantage, but not serving as an alternative to the already existing projects.
