Both Positive and Negative Aspects in Changes to Azerbaijani Election Code: American Diplomat

Azerbaijan, Baku, 3 June/ corr. Trend m. Aliyev/ There are both negative and positive aspects in the changes into the Election Code, Jonathan Henik, head of the Public Affairs Department of the U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan said to Trend on 3 June.

According to Henik, the Embassy is closely studying the content of this Bill and the Embassy will express its final opinion in this regard by the end of this week.

Milli Majlis (the Azerbaijani parliament) passed the Bill on Supplements and Changes to the Election Code on 2 June. According to the Bill, the presidential candidates are prohibited to conduct election campaign in state-owned TV channels with the term of the election campaign being shortened from four months up to 75 days. Furthermore, the number of signatures required for the registration of the presidential candidates has been decreased from 45,000 to 40,000.
