Meeting of GUAM Head of States Council Underway
Georgia, Batumi, 1 July / Trend corr. N.Kirtskhalia / The meeting of the Head of States Council was started in Batumi where the third summit of the Organization for Democratic and Economic Development - GUAM (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova), is being held.
Attending the summit will be the presidents of Georgia, Ukraine and Azerbaijan, officials of the US Department of State, the Czech foreign minister.
During the summit it is planned to sign several documents, particularly, a declaration of Batumi summit, communique, a GUAM declaration on use of transport and transit potential, Georgia's chairmanship at the GUAM.
Four post-Soviet republics; Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, established the GUAM format in 1997 during a summit of presidents of European Union countries in Strasburg. In 1999, Uzbekistan joined the organization but left four years later. In 2006, at the first summit of the organization in Kiev a decision was made to announce GUAM as an international organization with a new name; Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM
