Azerbaijan, Baku, 1 August/ Trend , corr G. Ahmadova, D. Khatinoglu/ Pakistan is the key alley of US in the region in a war on terrorism, however, it hesitates to fulfill several obligations with this regard.
"Since 2001, Pakistan is the key alley of US in the region in a fight against terrorism. However, Pakistan can not fully cooperate with US on several issues," Abdulanis Khei, the Pakistani political expert said to Trend by telephone from Islamabad.
The Pakistani Premier Yusif Rza Gilani visited US on 28 July. BBC reported that during US President George Bush's meeting with Gilani, the official Washington criticized Islamabad for not putting serious pressure by the Pakistani government on Taliban and Al-Qaeda organizations. During the meeting, Gilani stated that Pakistan is still the ally number 1 of US and hopes to be its ally also in the future.
According to Khei, US depreciated several interests of Pakistan after it seized Afghanistan.
The officials of US and Afghanistan have repeatedly condemned the attempts of the army and intelligence agencies of Pakistan to violate stability in Afghanistan. "The visit of the Pakistani Premier Yusif Rza Gilani to US aims at addressing this problem. US still considers Pakistan to be its ally and the financial aid will not be ceased because of such small problems," he said on a telephone from Islamabad.
According to Khei, one can not deny that there are there are people in the army and intelligence agencies of Pakistan connected with Taliban, however, they possess power which can pose a threat for the security of Afghanistan.
The US expert George Perkovich believes that Pakistan faces several difficulties because the populations along the afghan border have tribal and historical loyalties that are not with the Pakistani state.
"Pakistani military action may be opposed internally. Physically, the area where the fighters live and hide is extremely difficult to enter. There are reasons why these areas have never been controlled by the Pakistani state or any other state," George Perkovich, vice president for studies-global security and director of the nonproliferation program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said to Trend by e-mail.
According to expert, the US forces conduct military operations on border with Pakistan and it leads to the disorders within Pakistan by Taliban.
"Military action that kills civilians worsens the unrest, but killing foreign Al Qaeda, such as Egyptians, Uzbeks, and other non-Pashtuns, is not so controversial," the author of award-winning book India's Nuclear Bomb said.
As to the US aid for Pakistan, Perkovich said that it this aid has the most influence than others.
"But the US has not used its leverage on president Musharraf and others to persuade Pakistan to focus on fighting violent extremists within the country," he said.
Concerning this issue, the experts believe that there is also influence of India. The Pakistani expert Khei believes that after overthrow of Taliban, India is the strategic enemy number 1 of Islamabad and it enjoys large authority in Afghanistan and it undermines security of Pakistan.
"These problems lead to the disagreements between US and Pakistan in a fight against terrorism," expert from Pakistan said.
A representative of the Presidential Administration of Afghanistan, who wanted to remain anonymous, said that the activities of India in Afghanistan can not undermine security of Pakistan.
"It is obvious that Pakistan wants to turn Afghanistan to its 'assistant' and this government is not serious in a war on terrorism. "Taliban arms, receives financial support and is trained by the army and intelligence agencies of Pakistan," the official from Afghanistan said to Trend by e-mail.
On 30 July, The New-York Times reported that the Pakistani government needs evidence on the cooperation of Inter Services Intelligence of Pakistan and Central Intelligence Agency of US with Taliban and Al-Qaeda.
