Ukraine Should Offer International Community to Develop New Approaches to Solve Regional Conflicts: Opposition Leader

Ukraine, Kiev, 2 September / Trend corr. Z.Novosvitskiy / Ukraine should offer the international community to develop the United Nation's new approaches to solve regional conflicts, Viktor Yanukovich, leader of the Ukrainian opposition parliamentary fraction of Party of Regions, believes.

"Pivot of these approaches should be mechanism, which will make impossible the use of double standards to solve the issue on nation's right of self-determination!" Yanukovich, said in Kiev on 2 September making a speech from tribune of the Supreme Rada.

The leader of the Party of Regions fraction hope that the Ukrainian Parliament will neutralize negative consequences, which aroused as a result of the authorities' actions concerning developments in Caucasus.

"I understand that interior interests of parties and politicians' own ambitions enter the game. However, I am sure that mental anguish of developments and awareness of responsibility to protect peace will prevail over political discord," Yanukovich said.

Earlier the Party Regions stated that Ukraine should not actively support one of sides in the Russian-Georgian conflict. Nevertheless, Yanukovich urged to recognize independencies of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as Russia.

Large-scale military operations commenced in the unrecognized South Ossetia republic in the early morning of 8 August. Georgian Army was reported to enter Tskhinvali. Then Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and forced Georgian Army back to the Georgian territory.

On 12 August, the Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev said that he made a decision to end operations to compel Georgia to peace.
