Opposition Lobbies Sheriff Institution in Georgia

Georgia, Tbilisi, 19 September / Trend corr. N.Kirtskhalia / The parliamentary opposition initiates to introduce sheriff institution in Georgia.

This institution functions successfully in the United States, Giya Tortladza, the chairman of the Powerful Georgia - Christian Democrats fraction said. "The main thing is that sheriffs are not appointed, but elected. Therefore, policemen's actions depend on people's estimation," he said.

Mayors should be elected by citizens to provide more responsible attitude to people's demands, Tortladze said.
