Azerbaijan, Baku, 19 September / Trend corr. J.Babayeva / The Azerbaijani and Russian law enforcement bodies continue operations to prevent any danger expected at the northern borders of Azerbaijan any time, Elchin Guliyev, the head of the State Border Service (SBS), said at a news conference on 19 September.
"The latest developments in the northern borders of Azerbaijan are in the centre of attention of both countries' border services," Guliyev said at a news conference after meeting with the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Council of Border Troops in Baku.
Operations were held to render harmless members of the Forest Brothers organization, which functioned illegally and tried to cross the northern borders of Azerbaijan a while ago.
As a result of urgent measures, 13 people were arrested and made criminally responsible. Many fire-arms, military supplies, explosive materials, various maps etc. belonging to them have been revealed and withdrawn.
It was made clear that Ilgar Mollachiyev and Samir Mehdiyev planned to re-establish the activity of armed union 'Forest Brothers', create illegal armed unions in north regions of Azerbaijan and commit acts of terror directed towards disturbing public-political stability in Azerbaijan in general.
The northern borders will be fully supplied with the border infrastructure in 2008, Guliyev said. Special techniques will be installed at these places in 2009 and protection level will be reached 90%-100% there.
Construction work will finish in these regions by the end of 2008 at the President's instruction.
Azerbaijan will rank one of top places on protection level of the Azerbaijan borders, applying additional technical equipments in 2009, the SBS head said.
