Azerbaijan Opposition Party Demands to Punish Journalist’s Torture-Guilty
Azerbaijan, Baku, 21 October / Trend corr. J.Babayeva /The Azerbaijani opposition Musavat party voiced concern about the imprisoned journalist of the Azadlig newspaper, Mirza Sakit, who underwent torture in the prison, where he serves punishment.
"Musavat demands to prevent provocation against Sakit from the leadership of the prison and punish guilties," a statement by the party said.
Sakit's wife Rena Zahidova, said on 20 October that the journalist was beaten in the prison.
On 20 October, employees of the prison wanted to shave Sakit's head. Sakit asked them not to shave him on that day due to his birthday.
However, a group of employees in the prison beat him and shaved by force.
The Azerbaijani Justice Ministry ordered to investigate the incident.
Mirza Sakit was sentenced to three years of imprisonment in 2006 due to illegal keep of drug. The journalist says himself that he was arrested due to his professional activity.
