Azerbaijani academics established the Zaka initiative group on Jan. 23 to support the referendum.
Amendments to the Constitution are necessary for Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) Vice President Akif Alizade said at the group's founding meeting.
"The Azerbaijani people should unanimously support the amendments to the Constitution," he said.
Group chairman and academic Bakir Nabiyev said the amendments to the Constitution are needed given the country's current rate of development.
A total of 25 authorized representatives were elected at the meeting.
A notification on the group's establishment will be submitted to the Central Election Commission (CEC) on Jan. 23.
A referendum to make amendments and changes to 29 articles of the Constitution will be held in Azerbaijan on March 18.
So far, 13 referendum initiative groups have submitted their notifications to the CEC. Almost all of the groups have received their signature lists from the CEC.
Some 17 initiative groups were registered at precinct election commissions.
The Constitution was adopted in 1995. Amendments and additions were made in 2002.
