Hamas should be interested in creating a unified Palestinian government which will lead to unification of the Palestinian people, Palestinian Autonomy head Mahmoud Abbas said at a news conference in Strasbourg after a speech in the European Parliament.
Should Palestinian Autonomy restore its government in Gaza, the problem with transportation
of weapons through tunnels along the border with Egypt will be resolved quickly
and Hamas will sooner agree to extend the ceasefire with Israel, Abbas said.
"We [Fatah] have every right to restore control over Gaza, as we are the
administration of the region," said Abbas.
In his speech, Abbas condemned Hamas rocket attacks on southern Israel and urged both sides to stop hostilities in order to reach a truce.
European Parliament head Hans-Gert Poettering said at the meeting with the
Palestinian leader that if Hamas is seeking peace, it should stop bombarding
Israeli territory and recognize Israel's right to exist.
